Minimalism is a trend that emerged in the arts and then expanded into other areas, one of which is interior design. The main concept and premise of minimalism is the use of only the essential elements to create a space that is both orderly and simple.

In minimalism, architecture usually prevails over design, creating wide spaces with a feeling of openness. That is why in minimalist architectural designs you can see large windows that connect the interior with the exterior, and also contribute to better use of natural light, accentuating the spaciousness of the place.

In general, minimalism is closely associated with the style of modern interior design. Its main characteristics are the use of simple elements, defined lines and simple colours, generally being a monochrome colour palette.

There are actually three fundamental pillars when it comes to minimalism:

  • The decoration must be functional. The design is thought to live and not to load it with ornaments and useless furniture.
  • Elements that are purely decorative, such as paintings, sculptures, etc., should be reduced to the maximum.
  • The decorations and other elements that are placed on furniture should be as few as possible and should be very simple.

Ideas and tips to decorate your own minimalist space

Before taking any step in your decoration, think: what are you going to use the space in question for? How many people will use the space? What kind of activities will be done there?. This information will help you plan which items you will need and which you can do without.

Less is more. Minimalism has as one of its main premises the maintenance of order, therefore it is essential to avoid acquiring unnecessary objects and ornaments. It is better to buy few things but of the best possible quality.

The most appropriate colours for the minimalist style are light ones, mainly white. This helps to give a visual appearance of cleanliness, spaciousness and order. Avoid generating large contrasts above all. The colours used throughout the design should not be very different from each other, try to use monochrome colours. As for materials to combine, steel and wood are good options.

To avoid falling into coldness and give warmth to the room, you can vary the colour tones and add textures by adding tapestries, rugs or cushions. The elements in wood colour are also useful when it comes to providing warmth.
