What is Interior Design?

What-is-Interior-Design

Interior design is defined as the design discipline that is responsible for planning and executing the experience of the interior space. It does so by managing the volume and surface of the space to be decorated.

Unlike interior decoration, interior design not only deals with simple decoration but also studies and takes into account techniques of architecture, environmental psychology, and product design. Textile materials, colours, spaces, furniture and software applications are some of the tools that interior designers use.

Interior designers are professionals who have knowledge and skills in perspective, ergonomics, proportion, and lighting. Their work consists of carrying out renovation and decoration projects for private residences, commercial premises or work spaces.

These projects are planned by interior design professionals, taking into account the particular needs of clients and prioritising the functionality of the space to be modified. The goal of interior design is to create healthy, functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces for its occupants.

For all this, an interior designer must understand the behaviour of the clients and the uses of the room to create a functional space, coupling its design to the forms of the construction. In general, the interior designer works as a team with architects to carry out their projects.

The interior designer also takes care of equipping the spaces with aesthetically beautiful things, combining colours, textures and accessories in the correct way.

Interior-Design-is-based-on-Six-Principles

Interior design is based on six principles:

Balance means the visual equilibrating that is sought in the environment. Thanks to the combinations of objects, colours and textures, a feeling of fullness, balance and visual rest is achieved.

Rhythm is what is given through design in terms of vision. A well-done interior design leads the eye of the beholder to the room in a specific and harmonious way, from one object to others. Rhythm is achieved through the repetition of lines, shape, colour, or texture.

With proportion and scale, the design seeks to achieve a good relationship between the size of the room to reform. Nothing is excluded at this point, the objects are related to each other and at the same time are related to the room itself. Everything related to sizes and colours is planned with the design as a whole in mind.

Harmony and unity refers to, as with all the aforementioned points, interior design manages to create a unified and solid space that is complete. Thus, the interior design achieves a room with unity and harmony and a sense of rhythm.

As a conclusion, we can say then that interior design is a vast field with a very important function, planning and creating spaces that are functional but at the same time generate a pleasant sensation in those who occupy it.
